Overwhelmed by the Bible?

Bibles, depending upon the format, usually run to at least 1200 pages.  Old Testament and New Testament together are 66 books, differing in history, style, and sometimes even message.  Even with some basic familiarity, it is easy to get lost in the bigness or in the details.  Sometimes it is hard to see either its forest or its trees.

Presiding Bishop Curry recently suggested that if anyone wants to get at the heart of the Bible, and especially at the heart of the Good News of Jesus Christ, concentrate on the Sermon on the Mount as found in Matthew chapters 5, 6, and 7.  Its length is about six pages.  Except for two introductory verses and two concluding verses which serve to set it in context, it is entirely the words of Jesus.

It includes such passages as the Beatitudes, practical instructions for Christina living, a lot about our relationships with each other, and a lot about our relationship with God.  Give it several thoughtful and prayerful read-throughs.  Pay attention to how this heart of the Bible, this heart of the Good News, this heart of Jesus, works upon your heart.
